Capilano River Hatchery is in North Vancouver on the Capilano River just south of the Cleveland Dam. It was established in 1971 to boost salmon stock after the river was diverted due to the dam being built up river. Millions of salmon fry are released into the river here, and return every year on the man made salmon ladder across the river. The indoor/outdoor interpretive centre is open all year round and is free.
2. OUR VISIT
We visited on a beautiful summer day in July. The adult salmon could clearly be seen jumping up river, and up into the salmon ladder to return from where they came. I love the sound of the rushing water, and the river there is just gorgeous.
3. ACTIVITIES
THE HATCHERY-the self guided tour takes you inside with displays and tanks, and outside you can walk across the grates and watch the fish jump up the rushing water under your feet.
PICNIC- there are multiple single picnic tables and a large covered picnic area with gorgous views and the sound of the rushing water beside.
FISH-salmon fishing is permitted with strict guidelines for catch limits. Signs are posted outside the facility.
WALK- there are many trails in and around the river here, the views of the water here are spectacular.
